Brimelow, James Wentworth

James Wentworth Brimelow, master mariner, ship chandler, was listed as a resident of Hong Kong from 1845 to 1858. He was the co-founder and name partner in the mercantile firm and auction house, Smith & Brimelow. Queen's Road was listed as his address in 1850.

Brimelow died in ca.1859.

Brimelow married Harriet Fortescue Roberts, who was born in Cornwall, daughter of J. Roberts of Singapore, at St. Andrew Church in Singapore on June 20, 1848. They had two sons: John A.F. Brimelow (born in Hong Kong in 1852) and Edward W. Brimelow (born in Hong Kong in 1862). According to Cornish 1871 Census, Harriet and her two sons lived with her father John Roberts at West Derby, Lancashire. John Brimelow was listed as clerk general merchant in the same census.

Two individuals and two firms were listed as underwriters and general auctioneers in the 1850 Hong Kong Almanack and Directory, arranged according to priority of license. They were: John Currie, W. H. Franklyn, Smith & Brimelow and McEwen & Co.
