John L. Slade 施賴德, newspaper publisher, was listed as a resident of Hong Kong from June 1843 to August in the same year. He was the editor, printer and publisher of Canton Register 廣州紀錄報 (November 8, 1827-1843) from 1831 to 1843. Slade moved the newspaper from Canton to Macau in 1839, and from Macau to Hong Kong in June 1843 and renamed it Hong Kong Register 香港紀錄報. He unfortunately died from fever two months after arriving here on August 2, 1843. Slade was one of the first land purchasers in Hong Kong in 1842. He was said to be "a gentleman of good classic attainments and a Chinese scholar; a shrewd man too, of the feast of reason and flow of soul school".
Slade was a founding member of the Canton British Chamber of Commerce formed on August 25, 1834.
Publiciations by Slade had included: Narrative of the late proceedings and events in China, Canton: Canton Register Press, 1839.
