Leong Afat

Leong Afat, carpenter, was recorded as a resident of Hong Kong in 1842. He was killed in March 1842 by the falling of a newly erected wall. An inquest was held on his body at the Victoria Tavern on March 22, 1842. The verdict of accidental death was returned, with a "deodand" of 15 dollars on the house. It is a pity that the names of the people in charge of the inquest was not reported in the .

William Emeny, sail-maker, baker and confectioner, innkeeper, was listed as a resident of Hong Kong from 1846 to 1855.  He ran the Phoenix Inn, which was located at Queen's Road. He was a common juror in 1854 and 1855. Queen's Road was listed as his address between 1846 and 1850.

One of the investors in Emeny's bakery was John Smithers, Clerk and Usher of Supreme Court.

Adnams, James

James Adnams, saddler and hotel owner, was listed as a resident of Hong Kong from 1845 to 1850. He was a partner in the Commercial Inn, Queen's Road, from 1845 to 1850. Stanley Street was listed as his address in 1846.

Adnams was probably the first saddler (and harness maker and coach trimmer) to have set up shop in Hong Kong. He started the business in 1845 in Canton Bazaar and later moved to Stanley Street. He was trained in London by Lawrie & Co. of Oxford Street.

Hong Kong's first ferriery was opened by George Dudell on May 27, 1848 and was situated in the corner of Wellington and Wyndham Street. The shop was manned by an English Horse Shoer and $1.5 was the cost per horse.
